Types Of Witches

Alexandrian

The Alexandrian tradition was founded by Alex and Maxine sanders who wanted to bring magickal wisdom and knowledge to others. Alexandrians recognize a god and goddess. They celebrate all the witches sabbats as well as perform moon rituals.

Augury

Augers are like shamans in a way where they use signs and symbols to communicate with the gods. Kind of like Oracle they are not given a future to tell, but guidance in spiritual journeys. They can sense when someone is on the right path or not.

Celtic

The Celtic witch combines Pagan customs and traditions with Celtic ones. You don’t necessarily have to be from Ireland to practice Celtic magick, just be sure to study the customs and and learn all about their lore. If you are drawn to the Celtic way, show respect by embracing as much of it as you can

Ceremonial

Ceremonial magick was popularized by the hermetic order of the Golden Dawn. As you can probably tell by the name it basically means witches who put a lot of ceremony with their magick.

Chaos

From what I understand of this chaos magick is just as it sounds: chaotic. The practitioner has its own alphabet soup of ideas and incorporates them as they see fit. So, no exact ritual or deities..They can take bits and pieces of this and that and jumble them up to their own beliefs.

Cosmic

Cosmic witches are pretty much astrologists. They study the cosmos and they are great people to go to if you have any questions about your birth chart or using the planets in magick.

Dianic

This is a group of female witches who focus exclusively on the feminine divine. The name stems from the Roman Goddess Diana who is the protector of woman and the wild and the untamed spirit of nature.

Eclectic

Eclectic witches practice bits and pieces from different religions, but they don’t consider themselves a practitioner of one.

Elemental

An elemental witch focuses on controlling the four elements: Eath, Air, Fire and Water.

Faery

As you can imagine, faery witches work very closely with the fae. This tradition falls under Celtic witchcraft. Faery witches celebrate all the main sabbats of Paganism and Wicca as well as honoring nature and the seasons.

Folk

Folk witches concentrate on healing the sick and helping their communities. They use basic items that they already have around the home to aid in their work. Think eggshells, coins and wood, etc. other names for folk magick are hoodoo and pow-wow, depending on what culture you are from.

Gardnerian

This is the earliest branch of Wicca named after Gerald Gardner. This group usually forms covens of 13 people; led by a high priest and priestess and they celebrate both a god and goddess. These covens used to be held in secret, but I’m not sure if that’s the mode they use today

Green

Green witches are one with nature and they love their plants and herbs and usually grow their own to use in their magick. A lot of times they will make their own wands from branches they find out in nature as well as other magickal items.

Hearth

Hearth witches are those that infuse magick with the things around their home. So, think about cooking, cleaning and gardening…it’s all about having a magickal home and doing these tasks with magickal intentions.

Hellenic

I didn’t really understand much about this one except for it seems to be a Greek religion also known as Hellenes Hellenismos, and Hellenic reconstructionists. They base their religious views and practices on studying ancient religions and classical authors and they honor the Gods of Olympus.

Hereditary

Hereditary witches are known to have had their magickal powers passed down to them from generations. There is not a lot of proof of that as far as I can see, but some may consider themselves hereditary if they were born into a magickal family. In any case, we know today there is no need to have hereditary powers in order to practice witchcraft.

Kitchen

Kitchen witches are much like hearth witches except they focus all of their intent into their cooking. Every meal they make is magickal as they put all their energy into the prep work. Herbs play a big factor as they use them for seasoning their food. Their kitchen is sacred to them, so if you use it be sure to put it back how it was for these witches like to be cleaned and organized and everything has a place for a reason.

Lunar

Lunar witches work closely with the moon. Every phase has meaning to them and they work their magick mostly around those times.

Norse

Norse witches follow Viking traditions and honor the Norse Gods and Goddesses. Another term for this is Seidr.

Sea

Sea witches practice a lot of water spells and rituals. Their altars are usually full of items such as seashells, mermaids and nautical rope. They feel a strong connection to the sea, ocean and other bodies of water.

Secular

Secular witches are similar to eclectic witches where they practice magick from various beliefs, however, they do not work with any deities. They do not consider themselves religious as opposed to being spiritual. They do a lot of meditation and connect with nature and they use their intuition.

Solar

Solar witches work closely with the Sun. They get their power and energy from the Sun as well as consecrating their tools in the Sun.

Solitary

Solitary witches work alone either all, or most of, the time.

Swamp

Swamp witches are those who decide to live, or at the very least, practice outside of society. They are one with nature and actually feel more comfortable in the woods than around other people for they prefer seclusion.  They often use mud and herbs n their practice.
